#CRT09 Jamie Allen and Sarah E Cook

Posted by: Brian In: art|conference

Jamie talks about his fascination with tesla, and progression to his exhibition at exit art (Art Generator), his GhostBus Tour, an urban exploration of New York through the film Ghost Busters.

This idea of cultural references, there is more to it than he thought.

Standard research practice, but tapping the wierdness that is New York, how to rethinking the spaces you inhabit. Through  orthodox jewishness, New York, a space where people could work on the sabath.

Media ownership, how can you create your own copyright policy, a plain language copyright, “please do not sue us”

ChipTune Marching Band. Hippy loving music, but electronic, participate in a creative ecology. Is it like a fluxus kind of thing?

Research as immersion, what he is interested in is exploring the constellation of ideas, but in a direction of rendering, of making works.

Teaching by overwhelming

Thinking for doing requires instantaneous documentation, fast turnaround time, however it does require environments.

Now is the 10questions in 10 minutes (Sarah)

who is the we? collaborators / curators

what is the generation? Y him with lego watching ghostbusters

what audience did that piece (Ghost Bus Tour) attract? that generation….people had fun

what is the longevity of that piece? it continues online, it dosent feel done, but it is done

ethnographic aspects of the chiptunes? Need a deigned workshop, not just learning but having a learning experience that is shared. (cult like?). New linkages made. Workshopped performance is a new one.

Intent is still that the workshp happens, but that it could also happen as an instructable, as a series of resources. But would it be as fun as DIWO.

OCD/Overengineering what is it?

Jamie cant/wont necessarily characterise the stuff that came out of chiptune, but Aretti will use her ethnographic tools to unlock and analyze this work.

Performance

How do you explain what you do to someone in a hot tub? He is a designer of experience, creates new situations for helping people communicate with each other.

New piece : i love the internet and the internet loves me-Facebook database9dynamic idiosyncratic), text to speach9largely anachronistic), physical setup (variable).

How do you capture this piece,

PDF import and editing in openoffice
One function I have found useful in openoffice is the ability to import pdfs. This is possible by downloading and installing the pdfimport plugin. This means that you can import a pdf, edit it then output it at a lower resolution for screen. (0)

In the foreground is a Tetsuo Kogawa version (built during RadioCraftLab, during AVFest08) and in the back the remix by sonodrome (built last week at Sonodrome Central). Both assembled by me.

Bioplastic
Jay Cousins and friends had a hackday around bioplastics and laser cutting. Making the bioplastic from starch and glycerin (see this link for more details) and then laser cutting them. Cool stuff, they were even making different color ones. This is important as people move from using commercially sourced plastic in their makerbots to something else. Plastic is expensive to buy for these machines, but it is all around. SO be it bio-plastic or post waste plastic, ways of reusing these provide a compelling reason to throw away less waste. It is amazing that these materials are coming out of the factories, to be used in domestic situations. Together with polymorph and sugru, there are a variety of materials to play around for wearables, for prototypes and one offs. Bring on the future, with peer production.

augmented foraging - cool use of layar -

augmented foraging Originally uploaded by _foam A mobile phone guide to edible urban wild-food sources.
Amsterdam urban_ edibles is developing Augmented_Foraging, a  mobile phone guide to wild-food sources using Layar. Much better use of this program than finding property in Amsterdam (unless you live there of course)!
